Job Description:


FUNCTION & SCOPE:


Under the guidance of the Application Development Manager, the SUNY Research Foundation is seeking a Data Architect to join our dynamic team in Albany, New York, or virtually. The Data Architect is a hands-on technical position, responsible for providing technical expertise and oversite from an enterprise-wide perspective in the definition, design, review, selection, communication, and implementation of our data architectural and business intelligence direction. The position is also responsible for delivering technology plans, architectural artifacts, roadmaps, guidance, and the associated governance that is required to enable technology changes to be effective. The individual needs the ability to work in a team environment consisting of Project Management, Developers, DBAs, Business Analysts, Systems Engineers, subject matter experts, and system users to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of various data solutions. The ideal candidate will have an extensive data engineering background along with a strategic mindset and the willingness to learn, grow and develop in our technology ecosystem.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Provide technical expertise, oversight, and guidance in the areas of data management, data modeling, master data management, transformations, data integrations, and data pipelines.

  • Define and enhance the SUNY Research Foundation's data strategy and data architecture capabilities and their adoption across environments.

  • Develop data architecture blueprints, patterns, roadmaps, and frameworks that enable adoption, reuse, and standardization.

  • Create and manage the Enterprise Logical Data Model including gathering and aligning the model to our business, and guiding adoption across the organization.

  • Lead highly visible data strategy and transformation initiatives and provide data design activities on key enterprise projects.

  • Provide thought leadership on industry best practices and new technologies that improve our data architecture, operations, and delivery to provide a competitive advantage to our organization.

  • Facilitate data architecture reviews to ensure compliance with standards and architecture tenets (ability to achieve goals, performance, security, existing architecture alignment, technical debt management, among others)

  • Provide technical expertise and oversite for ETL and Business Intelligence developers on data-related topics and their adoption of enterprise principles.

  • Communicate data architecture vision, technical strategies, and trade-offs across various levels in the organization to gain adoption.

  • Research ETL and Business Intelligence capabilities as needed to best support RF's growing data needs and any new business requirements.

  • Develop and foster collaborative working relationships with business users, project managers, and team members.

  • Ensure the successful implementation of assigned projects through the entire project lifecycle.

  • Ensure high levels of quality through comprehensive testing (unit, system, integration, load testing, etc.).

  • Ensure that all underlying software in support of data solutions is kept current and in compliance with security standards.

  • Mentor team members in technology, architecture, and delivery of applications.

  • Create a shared sense of direction and community among the teams.

  • Learn other technologies as needed utilizing prior knowledge of related tools in support of the organization's projects.

  • Ability to project professionalism over the phone, via video, and in person.

  • Commitment to "internal client" and customer service principles.

  • A willingness to take initiative and continuously learn about new features and technologies in an ever-changing industry.

  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task, and work under shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Thorough knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).

  • Provide production support in adherence with the department's service level targets.

  • Provide estimates for project-based work and meet sprint and project deadlines.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and follow the Research Foundation's SDLC, documentation, and change control standards.

  • Ability to be on-call, as needed.

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.


Requirements:


Mandatory Requirements/Skills


  • Minimum of 5 years working as a Data Architect in support of enterprise data assets such as data warehouses, data marts, data lakes, master data management (MDM), data quality, data analytics & business intelligence, data integrations, architecture frameworks, data privacy, and data governance.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience with Informatica (or similar ETL tools), data modeling, and coaching team members on modeling: entity relationships, logical models, physical models, unstructured data, data design, data pipelines, modeling tools, and other related data concepts.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience implementing enterprise application architectures

  • Minimum 3 years experience with data security, data integration capabilities, and related tools in the data function.

  • Minimum of 7 years experience developing complex ETL processes and business intelligence dashboards, reports, and data sources (Informatica, and OBIEE preferred).

  • Deep understanding of data and how it relates to architecture (data ingestion, real-time, batch, SQL, NoSQL, analytics, etc.)

  • Experience communicating project direction and status with stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated experience developing enterprise application architectures to meet business requirements in complex environments.

  • Experience utilizing new and emerging technologies to facilitate innovation in existing applications and environments.

  • Comfortable with resolving conflicting viewpoints and achieving agreement.

  • Experience with creating high-quality technical documentation and architectural artifacts.


Preferred Requirements/Skills


  • Familiarity or experience with Oracle E-Business Suite.

  • Experience with Data Governance.

  • Demonstrated experience using Agile frameworks and CI/CD deployment pipelines.

  • High-level understanding of Finance and Human Capital Management to understand the context for custom development.

  • Experience building/reviewing complex ETL jobs utilizing Informatica in conjunction with enterprise batch scheduling tools.

  • Experienced in setup, configuration, and troubleshooting of OBIEE or similar Business Intelligence tools.


Education/Certifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or another related field.

  • Certification, training, or proven knowledge in Business Intelligence, Data Modeling, and Oracle database tools.
