Engineering Director Summary:

The Engineering Director demonstrates an active-oriented mindset and a focus on exceeding expectations. They show exceptional leadership, communication and project management skills, multiple years of management experience, and a belief in developing the skills and talents of others. This individual must take a “hands on” approach and will be responsible for managing 5-8 direct engineering reports.

The Engineering Director is responsible for supervising and directing the activities of manufacturing engineering, engineering technicians and machine shop personnel. In collaboration with the company’s sales and marketing efforts, the Engineering Director provides technical and innovation leadership to drive new business development, with particular focus in the area of medical products manufacturing. This role will promote the applications of “lean tools” to eliminate waste and improve workflow in support of quality improvements and cost reduction initiatives in all aspects of the business. This role is also responsible for implementing long-term engineering strategic goals including: 1) staying up to date on medical regulations and compliance, 2) addressing gaps in current capabilities to align with Company’s growth strategy, and 3) build and implement the required systems to achieve higher quality project execution & throughput. Works with other departments to ensure department strategic initiatives match the Company strategy.

Engineering Director Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with and the implementation of corporate and division policies and objectives.
  • Functions as a strategic leader with other senior leaders to develop and enhance the delivery to the market.
  • Develops, implements, and improves engineering tools, processes, and systems for company.
  • Responsible for achieving departmental project plans, budget, and schedule goals and/or targets.
  • Determines the engineering/technical organizational structure, required skill sets, and composition of the engineering organization.
  • Selects, trains, evaluates performance of, and directly supervises all key personnel of the department and, through them, all other assigned personnel.
  • Provides employee development opportunities through coaching, delegating, and cross-training.
  • Supports Advanced Engineering team in transitions of new product introductions (NPI) to the manufacturing floor.
  • Works closely with sales, marketing, and the operations team to discuss project specifications and procedures, set priorities and assign resources to support priorities.
  • Provides recommendation for efficiency improvements and automation opportunities.
  • Manages productivity improvement programs designed to address quality issues, reduce labor costs, and improve material yields, i.e. (VIP) Value Improvement Plan.
  • Supports manufacturing floor through sustainment practices in areas of optimizing uptime and process variation issues.
  • Interacts with customers and prospects to understand their requirements and quickly develops innovations to meet or exceed their expectations.
  • Demonstrates a hands-on approach to solving problems and works directly with the engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Works cross functionally with all department teams including planning, quality, purchasing, production operations and production technical support.
  • Performs root cause analysis of production, engineering, and quality issues.
  • Allocates resources to address priorities.
  • Prepares justifications and submits Capital Requests for required equipment and manufacturing improvements.
  • Ensures all projects adhere to recognized customer specifications and regulatory standards.
  • Works closely and in coordination with the manufacturing engineering organization to ensure that process and equipment development efforts align with design engineering and sales and marketing priorities.
  • Maintains an on-going external presence, spending time with both customers in the marketplace and sellers to gain insight into market conditions, customer requirements and ways in which the company can enhance the selling process in support of revenue growth.
  • Analyzes technology, resource needs and market demand to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
  • Formulates and recommends operating policies and objectives or changes in existing policies and objectives.
  • Prepares budgets and bids. Presents and explains proposals, reports, and findings.
  • Sets scientific and technical goals within broad outlines provided by senior management.
  • Develops production/product capacity analysis and improvement plans.
  • Participates in new product equipment selection, plant layouts, product flow and installation.
  • Takes a leadership role in defining safe practices. Promotes safety awareness within area of responsibility.
  • Develops and administers employee training to properly instruct both new and existing employees on internal documentation and quality systems.

Engineering Director Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Plastics, or Industrial Engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • Ten years’ or more experience in progressively more responsible engineering management roles.
  • Experience in a medical device or component manufacturing environment, and/or other complex OEM product development environment.
  • Experience with regulated quality systems like ISO-9001 or ISO-14385 and FDA regulations or industry equivalent.
  • Understanding of manufacturing equipment throughput, capacity modeling, and associated piece part cost estimating.
  • Experience with CAPEX site management especially related to NPI and associated new equipment purchases.
  • Experience working with the Operations team, prioritize and manage cost out initiatives and major continuous improvement programs (CIP).
  • Experience contributing to a strategic planning process and budget responsibility for engineering department and associated areas.
  • Expert in project management, product lifecycle management (PLM), and new product introduction (NPI) practices.
  • Excellent multi-project planning and systems skills with the ability to plan and coordinate large projects.
  • Ability to provide technical coaching, and leadership for an engineering staff.
  • Extensive knowledge of plastics processing technologies and/or materials processing equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, motivate, and develop an engineering team. Strong talent management understanding and orientation.
  • Proven track record of meeting product delivery deadlines on budget through implementing repeatable processes for forecasting and project/program management.
  • Strong information technology skills with a high degree of computer literacy.
  • Skilled in initiating inputs/outputs of a Validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) including testing methodologies and gauge R&R.
