The University of Illinois System has recently launched a program called Mexican and Mexican American Student Initiative (IMMAS) and are seeking a Director. The purpose of this program is to support the recruitment of Mexican and Mexican American students within the University of Illinois System while building a stronger presence with Mexican academic, research and private sector institutions. To facilitate these efforts the University is establishing a non-revenue representative office located at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico, City. The objective of this office includes a liaison with Mexican institutions of higher education and research and with federal and state agencies supporting higher education and research; sharing information with potential students about educational opportunities within the University of Illinois System; engaging the University of Illinois alumni in Mexico; support travel of students, faculty and researchers from the University of Illinois System to Mexico; and support faculty and students from Mexico to travel to the University of Illinois System.

The Director of this office will be responsible for all the activities of this office including:

  • Understand the breadth and depth of research at the University of Illinois System.
  • Become familiar with all academic areas at the universities at the University of Illinois System.
  • Position the University of Illinois System as a superior, highly ranked comprehensive, academic institution in the United States in Mexico.
  • Prepare and evaluate a timeline and outcomes for different academic and research activities monthly/quarterly.
  • Promote the University of Illinois in select high schools in Mexico.
  • Participate in major educational fairs to promote the University of Illinois System’s offer. Coordinate the preparation of flyers for these fairs and informative information in Spanish.
  • Invite speakers from Illinois on different areas of expertise to offer talks at various institutions in Mexico.
  • Identify, organize and facilitate webinars, symposia and workshops offered collaboratively among faculty from Illinois and Mexico, especially on common priority areas that benefit not only academic institutions in Mexico and the U.S. but also have broad societal benefits.
  • Identify and facilitate student mentorship opportunities for faculty in Illinois and Mexico.
  • Work with the University of Illinois System and higher education institutions in Mexico to facilitate mobility between the two countries, including identifying funding opportunities.
  • Maintain contact with alums and support the University of Illinois to build a more robust framework with alums in Mexico.
  • Work with the private sector to promote internship and other opportunities in Mexico.

    Requirements:
  • Knowledgeable about Mexican academic institutions and government educational and research agencies as well as having personal contacts in such institutions.
    Regular travel within Mexico and once or twice to the U.S. as required.
  • Place of work: University of Illinois System office at UNAM, Mexico City. This position requires active engagement with universities and there is flexibility to work in-person or remotely as needed for the objectives.
  • Required qualifications include a master’s degree with at least five years of professional experience in higher education. Ph. D. preferred.
  • Fluent in Spanish and English.
  • Work permit in Mexico is required. The University of Illinois will not sponsor work visas.
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
