GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:_*

  • The laboratory phlebotomist performs venipuncture and capillary punctures on adult and pediatric patients.
  • Delivers specimens to designated testing areas in the laboratory; instructs patients on proper collection procedures and testing requirements.
  • Participates in the instruction of phlebotomy students and new personnel; works with the computer; assists the laboratory receptionist with paperwork, including filing and the processing of patients.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:_*

  • Requires sitting/standing for long periods of time using a computer terminal and telephone.
  • Some bending and stretching required.
  • Occasional lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • Working under stress.
  • Manual dexterity required for use of computer.
  • Requires corrected near and far vision and hearing to normal ranges. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Potential exposure to communicable diseases or potentially infected bodily fluids.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:_*

  • Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
  • Checks the test requisition to ensure correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples.
  • Verifies positive patient identification by using “two patient identifiers”.
  • Performs venipunctures and finger sticks using the aseptic technique and in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity.
  • Coordinates the collections performed.
  • Performs bedside glucose test. Records the results, initials and dates the report.
  • Verifies specimen integrity and adheres to established procedures for rejection of unacceptable specimens.
  • Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
  • Responsible for good attendance as defined in the Attendance Policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Addendum – Waived Lab Testing

  • Performs all procedures authorized by the Director of Laboratory for Waived testing.
  • Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, tests analytes, reports and maintains records of patient test results.
  • Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control and quality assurance policies documenting all quality control and quality assurance activities.
  • Adheres to Biohazard/Bloodborne Pathogen, Chemical Hygiene, and other safety guidelines established to provide employee/patient safety and prevent injury and illness.
  • Performs assigned work productively within acceptable time frames under normal conditions.
  • Assists with in-service instruction of new employees.
  • Operates clinical laboratory diagnostic equipment according to instrument procedures.
  • Documents all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

Addendum – Moderate Lab Testing

  • Performs all procedures authorized by the Director of Laboratory for Waived and Moderate complexity testing.
  • Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, tests analytes, reports and maintains records of patient test results.
  • Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control and quality assurance policies documenting all quality control and quality assurance activities.
  • Adheres to Biohazard/Bloodborne Pathogen, Chemical Hygiene, and other safety guidelines established to provide employee/patient safety and prevent injury and illness.
  • Performs assigned work productively within acceptable time frames under normal conditions.
  • Assists with in-service instruction of new employees.
  • Operates clinical laboratory diagnostic equipment according to instrument procedures.
  • Documents all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  • Prepares and labels laboratory reagents and supplies.
  • Maintains product/supply inventories.
  • Reports test results following clinic protocols drawing special alerts to physicians and/or nurses on “red flag” results.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and corrects the problem or notifies the laboratory supervisor.

EDUCATION:_*

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited program for Phlebotomy.

EXPERIENCE:_*

  • One-year prior experience in a clinic, hospital, medical laboratory or physician office preferred but not mandatory or experience greater than one year where the primary responsibilities were phlebotomy and satisfactory reference check may be substituted for certification.
  • Critical accuracy with respect to the identification of patients and specimen labeling in a sometimes-stressful environment.

  • Certification in phlebotomy training and technique from an accredited agency a plus.
