Camp Starfish Waterfront Specialists, or Lifegurads, are camp counselors who supervise water safety and teach swim lessons at our waterfronts on Lake Monomonac. Candidates must be strong swimmers and able to pass a lifeguard certification course (provided as part of camp training).

Job Responsibilities:

• Teach individual 1:1 swim lessons
• Lifeguarding up to maximum hours according to Red Cross standards
• Render first aid and CPR as needed and within the scope of employee's certifications
• Encourage camper participation in camp activities
• Implement and monitor individualized camper behavioral plans

Internship/Course Credit/Fieldwork Experience Information:
Many individuals on our summer staff team use their experience working at Camp Starfish to obtain course credit through their college or university. In previous years, staff members studying Psychology, Social Work, Education, Recreation, Sports Science, Wilderness Leadership, Business Management and many other subjects were able to spend the summer having fun at camp while still working towards their degree!

If you are planning to use your time at camp to gain course credit, we strongly recommend that you speak with your advisor, etc. to determine the necessary steps to apply for credit at your particular institution. We recommend you apply as early as possible to give both you and us enough time to get everything organized.

If you join our team as a paid intern, you will receive over 140 hours of hands-on training as well as be placed in our Intern Seminar that meets weekly and focuses on professional development.

Note: Participation in the Intern Program is in addition to job responsibilities and is not required for employment. All staff receive training regardless of internship status.

Qualifications:

• Prefer one year of applicable work/life/college experience outside of high school
• Must be a strong swimmer.
• Current approved lifeguard/first aid certification OR the ability to pass the certification course provided at camp
• Must be proficient in speaking, reading and writing of the English language
• Must possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers and to implement the camp program. This may include walking on uneven terrain, standing, bending, jogging, lifting, stooping and stretching.
• Must be able and willing to work long days with campers and other staff members, often 7 am to 9 pm with limited breaks, six days a week
• Must be to handle the pressures and expectations that are associated with living with coworkers and children
• Must be able to work outdoors in varying environmental conditions including but not limited to: sun, heat, cooler temperatures and rain.
• Must be available to work the entirety of the season (June 8th - August 19th, 2023)
• Must pass all background checks as required for seasonal employees of an organization working with vulnerable child populations
